 There is a vacuum cleaner method and also a soap and water method. For both methods, start by gathering the necessary supplies — an old toothbrush, dish soap, a bucket or tub of water,

and cleaning cloths or sponges — on the kitchen countertop next to the sink.

Next place your shoes upside down on paper towels on your kitchen countertop (again next to the sink). Then set up two buckets or tubs in front of where your shoes are standing. Set the bucket of water on the left, and place your dish soap in the center. A good guideline is to put about a tablespoon of dish soap for every gallon of water.

Note: If you only have one bucket, then fill it almost to the top, leaving about an inch (centimeter) for air to circulate with each rotation. Next, wet your cleaning cloth or sponge in warm water and squeeze out as much excess water as possible. The more you squeeze out, the less water can drip off when you clean.

Next, carefully pull a pair of your new shoes out from underneath some paper towels. The first step is to place a damp cloth over the top of your shoes, so that it does not get wet.

 Grip a shoe and rub the soft upper area with the damp cloth for about 30 seconds. For best results, do this in sections — one quarter, one half, and so forth all around your shoe —

 until you have cleaned every corner inside and out. To rinse off the shoe completely, repeat step two again with another damp cloth or sponge. You may want to use warm water in order to loosen foul odors that may be stuck in your shoes.

Note that this method will not clean the sole of your shoes, which is the thin section of rubber between your shoe and the ground. For that, you will need another cleaning method.

Now for the soap and water method. Place a tub (bucket) of water on the left side and a dish soap-filled bucket on its right (if you are following along at home, it is probably easier to do this with two buckets). Using your old toothbrush,

 brush a small amount of soap onto all seams inside each shoe. If you see any frictional marks caused by ill-fitting or uncomfortable shoes,

try rubbing them with soap before brushing. If the dirt is dried and hard, you may need to give it extra attention with some warm water. You can now wash and rinse your shoes as in the previous method.

Once your shoes are clean, hang them up to dry with shoe trees inserted inside them. If you do not have any shoe trees, gently bend the shoes so that they fully dry inside and out.

Note: In order to clean a leather upper surface, use a damp cloth or sponge that is not too wet in order to prevent water from seeping into the leather's pores.
